Haschwalth himself is Sternritter “B” of “The Balance”. The Sternritter (German for “star knights”) are a twenty-six-man group, each possessing powers given to them by Yhwach and given epithets based around letters of the alphabet. Yhwach rises from his throne and orders Haschwalth to prepare the Sternritter, his elite army, for war. When Asguiaro admits his failure, Yhwach is unfazed, but executes him anyway. Yhwach, a physically intimidating man, asks Asguiaro on his report. The leader of the batallion, Jugram Haschwalth, addresses the Vandenreich’s Emperor, Yhwach (pronounced “Juhabach”), on the successful declaration of war. The Quincy batallion return to the Vandenreich’s empire, dominated by the Palace of the Sun, just as the wounded Asguiaro returns. The Soul Reapers prepare for war, Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi revealing the Quincy have been exterminating Hollows at an alarming rate and threaten the balance of souls in the world. Chojiro dies from his wounds and is cremated shortly after. Yamamoto obliterates the roof of his office with his sword Ryujin Jakka, but the Quincy escape with a warning that their invasion will be soon.
Yamamoto is unfazed until his lieutenant Chojiro Sasakibe is blasted through a wall, pierced by a giant arrow and his bankai reportedly stolen. In Soul Society, the Soul Reapers are caught off guard when a batallion of Quincy materialise in the office of Captain-Commander Genryusai Yamamoto, declaring war on Soul Society. Deciding to investigate, Ichigo, Orihime, and Chad agree to go with Nel, but Uryu refuses, reminding them he is still a Quincy and will do his own investigation. Ichigo learns from Nel that Hueco Mundo has been conquered by the Vandenreich, an army of Quincy, who are either slaughtering or enslaving her fellow Arrancar, and one of the surviving Espada, Tia Halibel, was taken prisoner. Asguiaro falls into an alley way, where he vanishes before Ichigo’s eyes by diving into a shadow. Asguiaro pulls out a Quincy medallion and tries to absorb Ichigo’s bankai into it, but it is too strong and destroys the medallion. Ichigo and Asguiaro battle, the Arrancar goading Ichigo into releaisng his sword’s “bankai” (the most powerful form of a Soul Reaper’s sword). Nel is chased by an anonymous Arrancar, Asguiaro Ebern, who claims to have helped “liberate” Hueco Mundo and works for an army called the Vandenreich. One night, a Garganta (portals that lead to and from the Hollow world Hueco Mundo) opens in the sky during Ichigo’s patrol, and out falls Nel Tu and her brothers Pesche and Dondochakka, bloody and injured. Things soon become worrying when Kisuke Urahara cannot contact them either. However, Ichigo can’t help but notice the lack of Hollows in the city, and is unable to contact his friends Rukia Kuchiki or Renji Abarai in Soul Society. Quincies were empowered humans with a dark, bloody history with Soul Reapers, and were exterminated long ago to maintain the balance of souls in the world. He is aided by his friends Orihime Inoue, Yasutora “Chad” Sado, and Uryu Ishida, the last active Quincy on Earth. Three months after Ichigo Kurosaki regained his Soul Reaper powers, he has returned to patrolling Karakura Town and slaying Hollows.
